Question 7: Looking Back At Your Preliminary Task (The School Magazine Task), What Do You Feel You Have Learnt In The Progression From It To Full Product?

In my premilinary task I didn't dare explore photoshop completely. Now i have tried all sorts of blending options and experimented and glows and 3D effects, I might not have used them on my magazine but it was by doing the magazine that I learnt how to use photoshop correctly.
I used inner and outer glows for the "DJ Afro" sub-title on the front cover, I also experimented with beval.
I'm also happy that I have managed to actually think about what I was going to do in my magazine rather than just do the first thing that came to mind. I was able to reflect on it and have time to fully experiment photoshop .
In conclusion i think that i have achieved so much since starting this course, i can now say that i know how to use photoshop and given a similar task i would be able to complete a lot quicker and with more ease.

Question 6: What Have You Learnt About Technologies From The Process of Constructing This Product?

From this project i think that the main technology i have learnt to use is photoshop. I had absolutely no idea how to use it, I was at ground zero. However, I managed to develop some photoshop skills throughout the project and am happy to say that I could create a front cover of a magazine in a short perod of time. The school magazine Front covers took me several hours just to get the masthead done. I had also never heard about Blogger and I can now use it conveniently and upload photos without that big a struggle, compared to at first where I managed to get lost on the website. I used my Blackberry Torch which has a 5.0 megapixel camera to take the pictures and was able to to upload them onto my labtop. I am happy to have learnt how to manipulate so many different things thanks to this project.

Question 5: How Did You Attract/ Address Your Audience?

First of all i think it is important that the front cover catches the eye of the reader. Because in most cases after someone having seen the front cover they will decide whether to carry on reading.
I used a light purple front cover because it attracts the eye straight away, and having just the name of the act with no more information would make the reader interested and want to find out more about him.
Also the fact that he is an unknown artist with just some other big names on the cover means that he is praised to be as big as the others, which would gain interest from the readers.
The second page they will look at is the contents, and i think that by adding another bright colour (yellow) it will appeal to them. The majority of the time a person will buy a magazine solely based on its front cover and contents page and i think that because mine have front cover and abide themselves from the ordinary that people would buy my magazine.

Question 4: Who Would Be The Audience For Your Media Product?

My magazine is aimed at men and women aged 16-25. I think that my target audience is fairly reasonable and that there would be no gender domination or anything that could possibly influence the readership. I am aiming for a 50-50% male and female and i would sustain this idea by every week putting either a male or female on the front cover. It is true that most of the acts in this genre are male but the women DJ's are becoming more and more popular such as Nicci Belucci and Fragma.
I think this would help keep a fairly equal readership, aiming at the age of the reader and not it's gender. It is possible that some readers varie from the age group, maybe youger children or to the contrary older people enjoy the magazine. But overall it is the 16-25 age group that is targeted by my magazine

Question 3: What Kind Of Media Institution Might Distribute Your Media Product And Why?

Seeing as the only two main rivals of my magazine are Mixmag and DJ, i think that there aren't that many competitors in that market. Lots of independant publishers would like to get involved because my magazine being similar than its competitors but with a little something extra, we would dominate the market and so it would be a good investment.
If not, maybe Development Hell, Mixmag's publisher would distribute my media product so it controls that whole area of the market and any the competition within the two companies would make them want to do better therefore making the quality of issues better every time. This is more likely to increase the readership as the magazines get better and better and Development Hell would make a considerable profit.

Question 2: How Does Your Media Product Represent Particlar Social Groups?

My magazine is mainly aimed at a younger readership (16-25 years old). i thought that this age group would be more interested in this type of magazine and that they could relate to it. Night life forms a great part of a teenager's life and my magazine is there to help them find a solution to what they think they should do on the weekend for example. This magazine would not appeal to an older generation as their interests aren't the same.
This magazine represents youth as it expresses the mainstream Dance acts that this age group likes. Therefore the readership will increase, it only represents a small age group but it is the biggest one, most of magazine readers are within that age group and so this magazine targets that audience. It covers relevant issues about teenage life and most of all the fun side of it. After work, this magazine advises them on what to do and i find that anybody within that age group would apreciate the magazine.

Question 1: In What Ways Does Your Media Product Use, Develop Or Challenge Forms And Conventions Of Real Media Products?

My magazine will follow some of the conventions of other other magazines such as "Mixmag" and "Dj" but my magazine is more original in it's own way.
Just like Mixmag, my magazine aims for a younger audience and has the same genre. It is essentially a Dance magazine to inform young people and advise them on the next biggest Dj's. My front cover follows some of the conventions of Mixmag, my masthead is similar, the model is placed nearly exactly at the same position as Calvin Harris in the front cover. The tittle is bold and advertises upcoming acts.
Like Mixmag I use bright colours because it is part of the conventions, it appeals to youth as they see it as interesting and different. Purple being a bright colour would automatically attract the eye of the reader and this is what Mixmag aims to do.
My contents page is also similar to mixmag's as it is in a bright colour and also i have featured a picture of dancers. This represents night life and mMxmag is very fond of advising young people what to do and this is the aim of my magazine.
The figures show that Mixmag has no real dominant gender in its readership so decides to not make it a male stereotype magazine with pictures of women everywhere. Like my magazine it is fairly open and shows no gender favouritism.
As for my double page spread i decided to not follow the conventions so much and go for a more original artistic type. It is rather different than most double page spreads however i think it would appeal to the audience.

School Magazine - New Front Cover

I had to upload a new school magazine front cover as i did not realise than i needed a mid-shot myself.
