Magazine Research

My first ideas' for my music magazine "Trance" were that the magazine would mostly cover places where the readers should go out on weekends. But now, the main focus of "Trance" would be to talk about upcoming DJ's. My magazine will try and balance the readership from the male dominance in other rival magazines like "Mixmag" or "DJ". Men are more likely to read about DJ and dance magazines, but when it comes to going out, there are as many women as men. Increasing the readership, and circulation.

The main rival of my magazine is "mixmag". When it launched in 1982, Mixmag created the dance music magazine market. It is the market leader and has maintained its reputation as the most influential title in the dance sector. It created the words “superclub” and “trip hop”, released the first legal DJ mix tapes and CDs and is the most trusted voice in dance music.
Mixmag has a certified circulation of 30,817 and a readership of 276,000.
The "mixmag" reader on average is 26- 72% male 28% female.
They have a high disposable income and a high propensity to spend it on:

  • Nights out

  • Clothes

  • Tunes

  • The latest mobile and MP3 player Nearly 80% do not read another music magazine and they spend little time watching TV, especially at weekends.

  • The second rival magazine to "Trance" is DJ mag:
"DJ Mag is a monthly magazine, first printed in 1991, dedicated to dance music. The magazine is available through newsagents worldwide, via subscription and as an online pdf. Each issue comes with a free CD. DJ Mag is currently published under licence by Thrust Publishing Ltd .djmag.com is our website, which attempts to replicate much of what is in the magazine, but also to give a forum to anyone and everyone involved in dance music.
